Messy Gourmet
WWW.MessyGourmet.Com
This site is essentially a tongue-in-cheek playful poke at
gourmet cooking as defined traditionally. We strongly believe
that fun cooking is gourmet cooking. The more adventurous and
messier you are when you cook the better it will taste. Everyone
is a gourmet cook..yes even you! In addition to experimental
recipes, the site houses fascinating but useful tips, help in
removing those yucky stains, and kitchen gadget reviews.

The Stained Apron, or Why Tipping Is More Than Just a Good Idea
The Stained Apron
If your New Year's Resolutions include losing weight or saving money,
here's a site that will quell your appetite for fine dining faster than
you can say "86." The Stained Apron is part of an underground community
of angry-waiter/waitress Web sites that reveal the sordid truth of what
really goes on behind those swinging restaurant doors. Although a tad
more civil than most of the other sites of its kind, the irreverent and
sometimes shocking 2-year-old site is still a candidate for Net Nanny.
The site is divided into two sections. The first, geared for customers,
ranges from a proposal for a mandatory course on how to be a customer
(failure to attend would revoke your dining privileges), to an
impassioned explanation of why tipping, despite being an acronym for "to
insure promptness," is not really optional. Cheapskates can choose to
argue the latter point, but the site's creator warns that if you go back
to the same restaurant repeatedly, and you don't tip, or you tip poorly,
"I guarantee the servers are doctoring your food or throwing it on the
floor and then back onto your plate or worse."
Things get a lot nastier in the "For Servers Only" section, where
bitter, battered and abused restaurant staff crow about pilfering
restaurant property and unrepeatable acts of defiance against rude
customers. Waiters from all types of restaurants keep the site fresh
monthly, with manifestos such as "Keep the Brats at Home," how-to advice
on how to sue a restaurant, and a gossip column that keeps a running tab
on celebrities who are rude and cheap tippers. But even as a former
restaurant worker, I couldn't stop myself from gagging while reading the
stomach-churning tales of Sweet Revenge, such as the bartender who
rinses sink cleanser around the glasses of offending customers and the
waiters who hid putrefying raw meat behind booths and other
out-of-the-way places that they knew the management didn't clean on a
regular basis.
After surfing this site, and others like it, you will think twice before
ordering a steak well done, or tipping only on the total before tax.
What you get may look like service with a smile, but the joke could be
on you.
