Gryphon's Aeire
I often come across recipes which are almost veggie but call for a small amount of ham, bacon, anchovy or suchlike for flavouring. I find sun-dried tomatoes (preferably the dry kind, not the ones in oil) to be a very good substitute for the flesh foods because of their salty, intense flavour - the end result will not be exactly the same, but in my experience is usually just as good.
